What is Diastema?

What is Diastema?

Diastema is the medical term for having a noticeable gap between teeth. The condition is common in both children and adults and can occur between any teeth. However, one of the most common forms of diastema and most noticeable is when there is a gap between the front teeth. For many patients, it is only an aesthetic problem; however, for some, this condition can lead to more serious dental problems.

Common Causes of Diastema

There are many different causes of diastema, some of the most common include the following:

  • Natural development: For many patients, diastema can occur due to natural development from the abnormal size, shape, or position of the teeth in relation to the jawbone. For example, if the patient has a large jaw bone but abnormally small teeth, this means that there is extra room in the mouth, which can lead to gaps in the teeth.
  • Bad habits: Bad habits, such as thumb-sucking and tongue-thrusting can also contribute to gaps.
  • Frenum abnormalities: The frenulum that can lead to gaps in the teeth is known as the maxillary labial frenulum, which is a small piece of tissue that links the upper lip of the gum tissue to the two front upper teeth. When the maxillary labial frenulum is too large, it can cause the teeth to not meet, causing a gap.
  • Gum disease: Gum disease, also known as periodontitis can result in inflammation of the tissues and bone that support the teeth. When this happens, it can cause the teeth to loosen, resulting in gaps.

How Can Diastema Be Corrected?

The types of treatment available for diastema vary; however, it ultimately depends on the age of the patient and the nature of the condition. For many children, gaps normally close naturally as they get older. However, if the gap persists or a patient prefers treatment for cosmetic reasons, then braces are a highly effective solution. Braces are able to apply pressure on the teeth and gradually close the gap over time, moving the teeth in the right position.
