Brushing & Flossing

Adults likely understand the necessity of brushing and flossing the teeth every day, babies, children, and teens may think they are invisible and that no bacteria or plaque will get them down. Regular orthodontic checkups are important routines that your children should get into to maintain their oral health, but you also need to ensure they are brushing and flossing at home. Here are some tips for helping children of all ages.

Parents are responsible for the dental health of their infants as babies are too young to brush their teeth themselves. Even before the teeth start coming in, you can clean your baby’s gums after meals using a gentle cloth or very fine-bristled toothbrush. Once the teeth start erupting, use a soft-bristled brush and a tiny bit of infant toothpaste to gently clean the teeth. Schedule a dental checkup by the age of one.

Children may be starting to get the hang of brushing their own teeth, but they will still need quite a bit of help from their parents. Try to limit their sugar intake, and be sure to demonstrate good oral health by brushing and flossing your own teeth where your children can see. Schedule a checkup with your Northridge orthodontist by the age of seven. If you are worried about your child’s teeth staying clean, we may be able to apply a special sealant to protect tooth grooves a toothbrush has difficulty reaching.

Young Adults

Young adults or teens can generally take care of their own teeth, but you can still help them to make good choices when it comes to the foods they eat. Encourage them to drink plenty of water and to avoid acidic foods and drinks, as well as tobacco and alcohol.
